The Architectural Museum of Rome conceptualizes itself as a monolithic mass carved to create public space. It explores the idea of monumentality in the city of Rome. The project is located on the original site of the Palazzo Farnese. On the ground floor, pathways of different scales are carved to become a participant of the city fabric. On the upper levels, the formal carving allows light and wind to flow in. The intentional outdoorness of the public space challenges the idea of a muserm as closed-off container of art. Rather, this museum is a block of the city that visitors could wander into.
The design process started with a typological analysis of spaces in Rome. The design attempts to recreate their spatial qualities in the museum. The architectural models, drawings, together with the space itself, constructs the exhibition content.
