Through provocatively choreographing the food system and public participation on a limited site footprint, the project attempts to open up a discussion regarding London's food insecurity, machine production, and human relation to land. The farming depot collapses the whole food production process from a territorial scale to our site. Using the vertical farming strategy, we turn an abandoned site into a food production machine to make urban farms a considerable food source. The form is optimized to maximize the growing area. Sowing, growing, harvesting, retailing, and composting are all integrated into the megastructure. With the capacity of the farming depot structure, the site becomes a landmark, just like the British Museum and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, attracting citizens and tourists across the city. Download In an era of rapid planetary urbanization and geopolitical realignment, what is China’s role in the entangled ecologies of transnational development? Made in “China”, Remade in Kibera delves into the transnational frictions between these global forces and local agencies within Kibera, Nairobi—East Africa’s largest informal settlement. One million people are packed into this neighborhood with an area similar to the SU campus. Through two intensive field surveys, totaling forty days, I engaged in critical conversations with a diverse spectrum of actors. The final product, an exhibition borrowing from the local practices of air-drying laundry in affordable housing courtyards, emerges by gathering community sketches and handing the camera to local photographers and youths. As a spatial intervention in the atrium itself, this exhibition invites the viewers to immerse in and interact with the cloud of images by viewing the two sides of a panel, which often showcases contrasting narratives of the same subject. This exhibition draws upon local narratives to reveal that more successful projects allow residents to actively retain their established living practices. Over time, the intended forms of these affordable housing units, as conceptualized by the developers, are frequently subverted and organically “informalized” anew. Ultimately, this research seeks to amplify the voices of Kibera’s residents to inform future building practices. It documents how the residents actively reclaim and reconfigure these contested territories, asserting their own forms of ownership at the emergent frontiers of globalization. &nbsp; <img width="1650" Ponsi May, 2023Co-habitat for Refugees and the Volun-Tourist is a provocative response to a current day crisis - the increase of refugees and the neglectance to the refugees. We decide to Operate on a pre-existing infrastructural typology: Hotspots, which is the first arrival facility in which refugees are detained for weeks to months waiting to be censored and obtain a legal status. The poor condition of ‘hotspots’ lack of privacy, hygiene, cultural activity and public space. Given the strong duality of Tourist / Refugees, this project serves as an attraction for both, a space for short-term stay for both the two groups, maintaining the original function of a hotspot but also allowing cultural exchange between the two groups. It is conceptualized as a self-sufficient machine, culturally and economically. As a cultural center and a hotel to tourist, they will voluntarily pay for the lodging for a short period of time, which generates revenue to support the hotspot’s operational cost. Addressing the gentrification as a result of the new urban developments in the neighborhood alongside the Olympics, our proposal provides an alternative housing model that is affordable, co-operative, and adaptable. Affordability does not only refer to a design and construction process that adheres to economies of scale, but also extends into the building’s post-occupancy life cycle through a sustainable standard of living. Each module has 32 residential units and 8 shared spaces for living rooms, recreation, and locally owned businesses. By isolating elements and services that residents could share, they can be taken out of the individual units and placed in the communal spaces. It explores the idea of monumentality in the city of Rome. The project is located on the original site of the Palazzo Farnese. On the ground floor, pathways of different scales are carved to become a participant of the city fabric. On the upper levels, the formal carving allows light and wind to flow in. The intentional outdoorness of the public space challenges the idea of a muserm as closed-off container of art. Rather, this museum is a block of the city that visitors could wander into. The design process started with a typological analysis of spaces in Rome. The design attempts to recreate their spatial qualities in the museum. move from place to place usually seasonally and within a well-defined boundary Gilles Deleuze, in his book A Thousand Plateaus, articulated the concept of the Nomad as an act of deterritorialization, an inquiry of smooth space without imposed political boundary. Nomadism on a domestic scale and a contemporary context manifests in challenging the private unit with pre-determined enclosures driven by the market, limiting other possibility of domestic living. Our project, rather than a housing solution, serves as a statement and provocation that challenges the prevailing capitalist market's rigid residential housing models, in which most domestic activities happen in the private and interior. Rethinking household activities, we propose that most domestic programs can take place in a public/communal settings and seasonally outdoor (see the program diagram, with green text signifying activities that can migrate indoor/outdoor), even in cold climates like Chicago, our site. Through grouping programs that requires a similar thermal comfort and level of privacy, the project takes physical form as a generous framework, a stack of four distinct levels with an array of height, daylighting, accoustics, and thermal qualities. The goal is to minimize the privately-own spaces (the private bedrooms on level 3) but in return offer an array of shared experience on the other levels. Consequently, all the design decisions are made to create distinct experiences on each level. To a achieve a level of criticality, the building systems and tectonics are comprehensively articulated to render this project as a plausible model and a versatile framework that can be iterated on alternative sites. Creatures (a tribute to Hejduk's Victims, 1984) as Nomadic Apparatuses, serve as the protagonist of the entire project. These creatures carries practical function and metaphorical meanings beyond conventional furnitures. They move indoor and outdoor and spread across the neighborhood as shared infrastructure depending on time and season. They migrate to different levels through our 21st century Hearth (Semper, The Four Elements of Architecture, 1851), a gigantic elevator, a verticle room. a cooperative space, a space of change, and that it should be used more. The street is everyone’s domestic space. We approach this project through a scalable implementation schedule, which operates in phases at different levels and requires the participation of numerous constituents – especially neighbors – for its implementation. The proposed format is open and flexible, and clearly expresses that the strategy to be followed will be tailored to adapt to new urban rituals and citizens’ needs.&nbsp; It is recommended that for a correct reading of our proposal, the four panels be studied at the same time, mounted horizontally, around the Timeline. Our intention is that the proposal be understood as dense, fluid, accessible, integrative, changing and unexpected. The ten-year strategy is articulated around five phases of implementation, through small-scale and progressive actions. The panels explain in more detail the actions included in each of them: Phase 1. Platform: Collective infrastructures, events programming, Concentrico as Quarry. Phase 2. Ephemeral Actions: Re-use of first floor premises, and start of renaturalization of the ground. Phase 3. Long-term actions: Extensive renaturalization and new urban rituals. Phase 4. Shapeshifting and third lives: Transformation, response to resulting interactions, regeneration. Phase 5. Re-evaluation: Achievements and challenges. Each phase assumes revision which can be prolonged, repeated, leaving room to react. The next edition of Concéntrico will serve to launch Phase 1: a platform to publicize the 10-year project for the Glorieta – Beti Jai – Duquesa de la Victoria urban axis, and to invite the public of Logroño to participate even in an ongoing conversation, which Concéntrico has been generating for the last ten years, and which now aims to permeate this area of the city as a zone of action and change.
